San Antonio Scorpions News Release

The Scorpions lost their second consecutive match, falling 1-0 to FC Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. A Corey Hertzog first half goal held throughout the match, giving the Canadian side all three points on Sunday.

FC Edmonton started the brightest on the day, creating a decent chance in the opening minutes of the game. The game started very fast paced and open, giving both sides opportunities to take shots at goal. The Scorpions drilled a couple of shots from distance that were easily saved by Parker on one end, before Hertzog sent a golden opportunity over the bar after taking a shot from 12 yards.

Edmonton did make the breakthrough, however when in the 15th minute, Hertzog was able to turn and create space before firing his low shot into the corner of the net past a diving Patrick Hannigan. The goal visibly raised the confidence of the Eddies, as the Canadian side continued to force turnovers and create chances on the counter attack.

Despite going a goal down, the Scorpions did continue to press, recording five shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of action.

"When we posses the ball and play the ball around, I think we create good chances," said Scorpions Head Coach Tim Hankinson at halftime. "Being a goal down, we are going to have to force turnovers in the second half."

The second half played out similar to the first. The match became pretty even after 75 minutes, as both teams were looking for creative angles to find scoring chances. Javier Saavedra hit the post for the Scorpions on a free kick, marking the closest San Antonio would come to scoring in the game.

Edmonton showed that they did not want to give up, continuing to create chances on the counter attack after some good defending. Despite the Scorpions throwing everything they had towards goal in the last 10 minutes, Edmonton proved to be too organized and strong defensively.

Spanish striker, Borja Rubiato, came on in the second half, making his Scorpions debut, and local favorite, Sean Arters, got his first taste of NASL action in the match, but both failed to make an impact in the game.

With the loss, the Scorpions continue to look for the first win of the Fall Season. The squad returns to San Antonio and Toyota Field next weekend to take on the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on First Responders Appreciation Night.
