San Antonio Scorpions News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The San Antonio Scorpions' run in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was a short one as they fell 0-2 to the Austin Aztex at Toyota Field.

The Scorpions started the game slowly and saw the visitors create the bulk of the chances in the first half. Aztex 'keeper Devin Perales was only tested once in the opening frame, in the 20th minute when Pablo Cruz curled a free kick from 20 yards over the wall and on frame, but into Perales' gloves.

Austin center back Mikey Ambrose opened the scoring just after halftime. After an Aztex corner that was cleared short, Ambrose stepped up to the ball and hit a line-drive volley from 22 yards that zipped straight into the upper left 90 of Daryl Sattler's goal. After the score, the Scorpions' attack came to life as second-half substitutes Stephen DeRoux and Rafael Castillo ignited the offense. In a span of about five minutes starting at the 60', Castillo placed three shots on frame - one requiring a full-stretch save by Perales - with two of those directly served by DeRoux. Unfortunately for the home side, none found the back of the net.

In the 76th minute, a controversial non-call immediately led to the game-sealing goal by the Aztex. Striker Omar Cummings - also a second half substitute - looked to be clearly pulled down in the box, but the referee helf his whistle and allowed play to continue. On the ensuing counter-attack, former Scorpion Trevin Caesar found space and hit a shot from outside the box that made the score 2-0 and sealed the Aztex trip to Houston in June to face Major League Soccer's Dynamo in the fourth round.

This Saturday, the Scorpions return to NASL play as they host the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in a rematch of last November's Championship Final.
