San Antonio Scorpions News Release
OTTAWA, Ontario (Sunday, October 18, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions lost to the Ottawa Fury 0-1 on a chilly Sunday afternoon at TD Place in Ottawa, Ontario. The win puts Ottawa on the brink of clinching the NASL's Fall Season, while the Scorpions will now need to win their final three games and receive help from around the league to make the playoffs.
The game-winning goal was scored in the 68th minute by midfielder Mauro Eustaquio, who was set up for his shot by a clever pass from Canadian international Julian De Guzman. After the score, the Scorpions were forced to throw bodies forward in the search for two goals (and all three points) to keep realistic playoff hopes alive. The Alamo City boys were continually thwarted, however, by a well organized Fury defense and Golden Gloves frontrunner Romauld Peiser. The outcome of the match was sealed in the 90' when second half substitute Eric Hassli received a straight red card for a lunging tackle in the corner.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair and each side had very clear chances to score, but the goalkeepers for each team made spectacular saves to keep the score 0-0. In the 12', Fury center forward Tom Heinemann broke through the San Antonio backline and was in on Daniel Fernandes 1-v-1. Heinemann had time to try and pick his spot and he went low for the far post, but Fernandes was quick to the ground and gobbled up the shot on what looked to be an easy score.
Three minutes later, Rafael Castillo ran onto a ball just outside of Ottawa's area and one-timed a side-footed shot with his left foot that was zeroed in on the upper 90 on the right side of the frame. But Peiser matched Fernandes' highlight-reel save with one of his own at a full stretch to deny the Scorpions' captain.
Less than a minute later, Fernandes upped the ante when he made a diving, one handed deflection that redirected a Paolo Junior shot just enough that it curled outside of the far post. Again Peiser played the game of anything you can do, I can do better. In the 28th minute, Omar Cummings found space 20 yards from goal and hit a powerful right-footed shot that was on frame, but the Fury goalie dived hard to his left and parried the ball away from danger.
The Scorpions will travel straight to South Florida for a midweek matchup with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers before playing their final home game of the season next Saturday at Toyota Field against the New York Cosmos. The Fury are on the road for their final two games, starting next Saturday at the Jacksonville Armada.
