San Antonio Scorpions News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Sunday, October 25, 2015) - The Scorpions fell 1-2 to the New York Cosmos in their 2015 home finale at Toyota Field. The rare Sunday afternoon kickoff was forced after heavy rains barraged the San Antonio area Saturday morning, triggering flash floods across the Alamo City.

The Scorpions came out attacking in the first half as they controlled possession and created numerous dangerous shots and set pieces. Forward Billy Forbes led the way with runs in behind the Cosmos defense throughout the game.

In the 43', he put in the first goal of the match to give the pink and black the lead going into the locker room. The goal scoring play began with a pass into the box from Scorpions striker Omar Cummings. Forbes took the pass, beat a couple of Cosmos defenders, and found some space on the left side of the area. He then sent a ball in low that skirted past the outstretched arms of New York goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer towards the far post and into the back of the net. New York's best chance of the first half came in the 33' from forward Raúl. The former Real Madrid star took his left-footed chance from just outside the box and curled it towards the upper left-hand corner of goal, but it went just wide of the frame.

The Scorpions had all the momentum heading into halftime with the late score in the first half, but the Cosmos came out controlling the ball and the pace of the play in the second half. They got on the board in the 61' after forward Gastón Cellerino went down hard on a challenge in the box by Scorpions 'keeper Daniel Fernandes. Marcos Senna stepped up to the spot to take the penalty kick. He hesitated just enough on his run up to the ball to get Fernandes to commit first, then Senna slotted the ball home in the lower right-hand corner to tie the match at 1-1.

In the 78' the visitors took the lead. Kris Tyrpak took down Senna about 22 yards from the Scorpions' goal to set up a free kick. Left back Ayoze stepped up to take the set piece, and made the Scorpions pay with a powerful strike that rocketed past Fernandes into the upper 90.

The most dangerous opportunity for the Scorpions in the second half came in the 80' when Forbes got all of a volley at the edge of the box that forced Maurer to make an outstanding diving save. The Scorpions worked hard to find an equalizer in the closing seconds of stoppage time as Rafael Castillo - who came on as a second half substitute - had two free kicks from dangerous spots outside the 18-yard-box as well as a corner kick from the right side, but none of the chances ended up in the back of the net.

The Scorpions will finish off the 2015 NASL season on the road at Minnesota United on Halloween.
