SAN ANTONIO, TX (June 13, 2012) - The San Antonio Scorpions announce the first annual "Futbol & Fireworks", a two-day event that will feature an international doubleheader on Saturday, June 30 and a celebration of America's Independence on Wednesday, July 4.
On June 30, the team will host the Scorpions International Challenge, a double header that features their match against the Atlanta Silverbacks and an exhibition match between two prominent club teams from Mexico's first division: Reigning CONCACAF Champions League champion C.F. Monterrey Rayados and San Luis F.C.
The Scorpions International Challenge is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Heroes Stadium on Saturday, June 30.
Four days later on Wednesday, July 4, the Scorpions will celebrate America's Independence with a 4th of July Fireworks Celebration powered by Magic in the Sky, which will feature a fireworks show at the conclusion of the Scorpions match against FC Edmonton. Kickoff for the match is set for 7:30 p.m.
"We are honored to have C.F. Monterrey Rayados and San Luis F.C. come to San Antonio to be part of what will be a memorable week for our fans and city," Scorpions President Michael Hitchcock said. "Our goal with 'Futbol & Fireworks' is to bring fun and excitement to San Antonio while bringing the city together in celebrating what makes our city and our nation great."
The Scorpions intend to make the Scorpions International Challenge an annual event, bringing international clubs from around the world to play in San Antonio as part of a double header with a regular season Scorpions match.
C.F. Monterrey is one of the most prestigious clubs in the Mexican first division and is in the midst of its most successful era in club history.
