Scoring outbursts propel IceHogs, Mallards

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO --- The Rockford IceHogs and the Quad City Mallards used scoring outbursts to post 2-0-0 records on the week in United Hockey League (UHL) action. Both teams found the back of the net 14 times during their offensive surges.

The IceHogs opened the week with a 5-4 shootout victory over Kalamazoo. It was Rockford's first shootout win of the season. Four different IceHogs scored in regulation, and Bryce Cockburn, Preston Mizzi and Erick Lizon tallied scores in the shootout. In the second game, Rockford tied a club record and became the first team in the UHL to post double-digit goals this season in a 10-4 victory over the Muskegon Fury. Five IceHogs tallied three or more points, and Robin Big Snake led the way with a team-record tying four goals and an assist.

Big Snake (4g, 2a) and Mizzi (2g, 4a), Quad City's second-leading scorer with 45 points, both tallied six points on the week. Mizzi is currently on a season-high nine-game point streak. During the stretch, he has nine goals and 12 assists.

The Mallards picked up a pair of home victories with a 9-3 defeat of Flint and a 5-1 victory over Port Huron. Justin Chwedoruk propelled Quad City's offense with back-to-back four-point performances. Against the Generals, Chwedoruk recorded his first hat trick as a Mallard. His first goal of the night, scored on the power play, stood up as the game-winning tally. He also came up big against the Flags as well, recording a goal and three assists.

Chwedoruk's big week made him the team's scoring leader with 48 points (17g, 31a), passing teammate Don Parsons (46 points). Another one of four Mallards with 40 or more points this season is Luke Stauffacher. He had six points on three goals and three helpers in the pair of victories.

FORTY IS A MAGIC NUMBER - The Muskegon Fury are two victories shy of reaching 40 victories for the fourth consecutive season. After a pair of losses last week, the league's leader with a 38-10 record will attempt to reach the 40-win plateau in this week's scheduled games. On the two-game road trip, Muskegon will face Port Huron on Friday and Rockford on Saturday.

CLOSING IN ON 500 - Kalamazoo forward Kory Karlander needs just four more points to reach 500 for his career. He tallied two goals last week to bring his career total to 494 points. He currently is the Wings' leading scorer with 51 points (26g, 25a).

WELCOME ABOARD - Preston Cicchine of the Flint Generals recorded his first point as a professional with an assist on Friday night against Quad City. The following night, he tallied his first professional goal in a 7-5 win over Chicago.

For Port Huron, newly signed Bobby McKillop scored a goal in a 3-1 loss to Elmira on Wednesday.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (1-1-0) - The PrairieThunder snapped a season-high six-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Elmira on Saturday...Rookie goaltender Steffan Braunlich stopped 41 of 42 shots in the win, snapping a personal six-game losing streak against the Jackals...Right winger Greg Koehler, who was recently obtained in a trade with Chicago, has tallied five points (2g, 3a) in his first four games with Bloomington...The PrairieThunder have scored six power-play goals in their last five games.

Chicago Hounds - (0-2-0) - At the end of January, rookie forward Matt Amado had one of his best months ever as a pro with 11 points in 13 games...Defenseman Rod Aldoff tallied three assists against Flint. It was the third time this season he recorded three points...Goaltender Marty Magers leads the UHL with 1,129 saves...The Hounds will face Elmira twice in two days this weekend. Chicago has posted a 2-3-0 record against the Jackals...Chicago is 3-11 against teams from Michigan, and the Hounds will face Kalamazoo and Port Huron this week.

Elmira Jackals - (2-1-0) - Dave Lemanowicz had an outstanding week in goal picking up all three decisions in net. He allowed one goal on 26 shots in a 3-1 win over Port Huron, and he made 41 saves in a 3-1 victory over Bloomington...Right winger Frank Littlejohn is on a seven-game points streak, with five multiple-point performances during his hot streak...Elmira has not had an above-0.500 record in a single month since November...The Jackals signed two-time UHL All-Star David Hymovitz last week. He has 178 points in 158 career games in the UHL.

Flint Generals - (1-1-0) - Left wing Jeff Zehr is on a nine-game points scoring streak, scoring 17 points on five goals and 12 assists during the span...Goaltender Bryan Worosz has won four consecutive starts and five of his last six. He made 23 saves in a 7-5 win at Chicago on Saturday...The nine goals scored by Quad City on Friday were the most the Generals have given up in a game this season...Flint travels to Rockford and Quad City this week. The Generals are 2-2-0 against the IceHogs and 0-3-0 versus the Mallards this season.

Fort Wayne Komets - (2-0-0) - The Komets are on a seven-game win streak with three wins in a row at home and four consecutive victories on the road...Center J.C. Ruid leads Fort Wayne and ranks third in the UHL with 58 points... Ruid (6g, 9a) and defenseman Guy Dupuis (1g, 11a) are both on a seven-game points streaks...The Komets have not surrendered a power play goal in four straight games and have a total of 26 consecutive successful penalty kills...Goaltender Kevin St. Pierre is unbeaten in regulation in his last nine starts.

Kalamazoo Wings - (0-1-1) -.The Wings are currently on a three-game winless streak, which ties a season high...Forward Glenn Detulleo is on a five-game points streak...With left winger Nick Bootland's shorthanded goal in a 4-1 loss to Fort Wayne, he moved into sole possession of second place in career shorthanded tallies in Kalamazoo club history with seven...Three of Kalamazoo's four games this week are against Western Conference teams. The Wings have a 12-5-2 record when facing teams from the West this season.

Muskegon Fury - (0-2-0) - For the first time this season, the Fury sustained back-to-back defeats...Right winger Adam Smyth accumulated 42 penalty minutes over the weekend...Center Todd Robinson, the UHL's leading scorer (31g, 61a), needs only three assists to surpass Robin Bouchard (420) as Muskegon's all-time assists leader...With one goal and one assist against Rockford, left wing Ryan Barnes reached 100-pro career points...The Fury lead the UHL in third period come-from-behind victories with four...The Fury play two games this week, both on the road.

Port Huron Flags - (1-2-0) - Snapping an eight-game losing skid, the Flags beat Muskegon 3-2 on Friday. Goaltender Noah Ruden stopped 37-of-39 shots to propel Port Huron to its first win in LC Walker Arena this season...The Flags have a 7-2-1 record when holding the lead after the second period... Greg Bullock leads Port Huron with 39 points (13g, 26a)...Despite sitting out the past month with an injury, goaltender Dustin Traylen is tied for third in the UHL in SPCT (.914)...The Flags will face Chicago for the first time at home this season on Sunday.

Quad City Mallards - (2-0-0) -.The Mallards set a season high with nine goals, scoring four on the power play, in a 9-3 win over Flint on Friday...Goaltender Jason Tapp recorded both decisions in net, with 67 saves and a .944 SPCT on the week...Quad City captain Patrick Nadeau is scheduled to assume the top spot on the Mallards' all-time games played list. He has played 435 games in a Mallards sweater entering this weekend...This season Quad City is unbeaten versus both of this week's opponents, Bloomington (5-0-1) and Flint (3-0-0).

Rockford IceHogs - (2-0-0) - Robin Big Snake set a club season high of five points (4g, 1a) against Muskegon. The last three skaters to net hat-tricks for Rockford all notched four goals...With center Preston Mizzi's short-handed goal on Saturday, he became Rockford's career goals leader (69 goals)...In their first shootout win of the season on Friday, the IceHogs scored on 3-of-4 shots. Prior to that, Rockford had converted only 3-of-19 shots during shootouts...With right winger Jason Ralph in the lineup, the IceHogs have a record of 9-0-1.
