SCL Honors July Players Of The Month

CONYERS, GA - With less than a month remaining in the inaugural season, the South Coast League is pleased to announce that Aiken's Scott Houin and Charlotte County's Ricardo Gomez have been named July's player and pitcher of the month.
Houin, who was drafted in the 44th round of the 2003 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles, exploded for the Foxhounds during the month of July. Houin went.371/.422/.629 for the âHounds, along with five homeruns and twenty-nine RBI's. He was also a menace on the base paths, swiping twelve bases without being caught. His .354 season batting average and .604 slugging percentage are both tops in the league.
A centerfielder from Colorado Springs, Colo., Houin earned All-America honorable mention honors in 2007, his only year at Mount Olive University. A first team All-Region selection, Houin was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2007 NCAA II South Atlantic Regional. Houin hit 11 home runs during his campaign with the Trojans, batted .322 and was ranked nationally with nine triples. Houin transferred to Mount Olive from Central Missouri.
Gomez, who went 2-1 with a 2.01 ERA during the month of July, shut down the competition in his five starts. For the season, he is 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 15 games, starting six of them. A power pitcher, he has notched 59 strikeouts in only 51 1/3 innings of work and batters are hitting a lowly .179 against him
Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Gomez signed as a free agent with the Pirates in 1997 and played in their minor league system for four seasons. His return to professional baseball has been long overdue and has proven that some things better with age.
