Orange County Flyers News Release
Jesse Schmidt lived the dream Thursday night when he came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, the bases loaded and the Flyers down a run. He came through by driving a double to right center to score the tying and winning runs and push the Flyers to an 8-7 win.
After hearing that first place Chico had stolen a game from Yuma in the 9th inning, the Flyers followed suit by taking the series from San Diego at Goodwin Field Thursday night.
The Surf Dawgs broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the 9th inning when Victor Roldan started a rally with a one-out single and was pushed to third base by an opposite field single by Adam Mandel. Wes Faust then uncorked a wild pitch to score Roldan with the go-ahead run.
The Flyers started their 9th inning rally when Rich Pohle and Bret Levier hit back-to-back singles. Clemente Bonilla then walked to load the bases.
Garry Templeton II struck out to set up the dramatic confrontation between Josh Rummonds and Jesse Schmidt.
The Flyers dug out of a major hole in the 8th inning when they scored four runs to tie the game at 6-6. With two runners on, Clemente Bonilla singled to right field and Bret Levier was held at third base when Matt Maloney's throw came into the infield.
But Maloney's throw was wild at the plate, which scored Levier. The pitcher Justin Ottman then picked up the ball and tried to catch Buddy Morales advancing to third base.
Ottman threw the ball down the left field line, which scored both Morales and Bonilla to get the Flyers within a run.
Garry Templeton II followed that play with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Peanut Williams.
After three easy innings, Craig Frydendall ran into big time trouble in the 4th inning. He gave up seven hits and six runs and had to be relieved by Reed Dickert. Nick Guerra delivered the big blow with a three-run homerun.
Reed Dickert settled things down with 3.1 scoreless innings.
The Flyers took a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st inning when Schmidt drove in Bonilla and Hector Zamora drove in Peanut.
The Flyers begin the most important series of the season Friday at 7:05 pm as the Chico Outlaws come to town. The Flyers will kick off the series with Chris Jakubauskas.
