Schempp, Stars Edge Odessa, 3-2

Traverse City North Stars News Release
BLAINE, Minn. - Kyle Schempp went upstairs in the third round of the shootout session - and Kyle Laslo slammed the door - as the Traverse City North Stars captured a 3-2 victory over Odessa on Thursday in second-round NAHL Showcase action at Schwan Super Rink in suburban Minneapolis.
Schempp (Saginaw, MI/Compuware U18) had tied the game early in the third period with his first junior goal at 5:20, and stepped to the center ice face-off circle with Traverse City holding a 1-0 edge in the five-round shootout. His forehand wrister found the top left corner of the net, and Laslo (Fenton, MI/Osoyoos KIJHL) thwarted the Jackalopes' last gasp, preserving the triumph.
Odessa seized a 1-0 edge just 3:30 into the affair, but Alec Shields (Pittsburgh, PA/TC North Stars/Mercyhurst College) issued a rejoinder a minute later. Sheldon Taylor racked the only goal of the second period - his second of the game for the Jacks - setting up Schempp's late-game heroics. Shields opened the Stars' portion of the shootout with a conversion, and Laslo rebuked each of Odessa's four chances. He finished with 26 saves.
The North Stars outshot the Jacks by a 38-28 margin, including 5-2 in the scoreless overtime frame. Alexander Taulien (Crystal Lake, IL/TC North Stars) and Nathan Harris (Fowlerville, MI/Lansing Capitals U18) assisted on Shields' marker, while Will Badner (Cadillac, MI/Motor City NAHL) set up Schempp for the equalizer.
The North Stars will clash with Aberdeen in third-round NAHL Showcase action on Friday morning. The Wings are 1-1 after topping Wenatchee 2-1 on Thursday.
