Brooklyn Aviators News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Aviators used some late game heroics to advance their current win streak to 21 games in a 3-2 come from behind victory over the visiting Danbury Whalers Thursday night in Federal Hockey League action.
Andrew Scampoli played the role of hero for the A's netting the game winning goal late in the 3rd period. New York fittingly wins their last regular season home game making them 22-1-1 at home over the course of the season.
Danbury opened up the scoring in the 1st on an early power play opportunity just 12 seconds into the Whalers one-man advantage. Igor Karlov netted his 26th goal of the year off a pass from behind the net to put Danbury ahead 1-0. Meanwhile, the remainder of the period was comprised of the A's failing to score on three separate power play chances. After a scuffle between several players broke out behind the New York goal after the 1st period horn, Danbury took a 1-0 lead to the locker room.
Early in the 2nd period, Aviators center Anthony Longo beat Whalers goaltender Nick Niedert for his 1st goal of the season to knot up the scoring at 1 a piece. The score would stay tied less than a minute as Martin Moucha put the Whalers back on top 2-1 with his 9th mark of the year. K.C.Timmons equalized the scoring again with 10:37 to go in the 2nd on a goal that was initially stopped by Niedert but eventually trickled passed him with pressure coming from other Aviators in front of the net. The goal, Timmons' 12th of the year, tied the score at 2-2 and gave New York some much needed momentum heading into the 3rd and final frame.
The score would remain tied at 2-2 until 1:23 left in the 3rd. Scampoli took advantage of a power play opportunity and scored his 19th goal of the year to give New York their first and only lead of the night as well as the win.
Kevin Druce improves his record to 24-8-2 and despite a stellar performance in net. Niedert is nabbed with the loss taking his overall record on the year to 19-14-3.
The Aviators move to 32-12-2 while the Whalers drop to 23-18-5.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow evening at 7:05 at Danbury Ice Arena. Fans can keep up with the action live on LiveSportsVideo.com and Pointstreak.com.
