Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Wednesday, August 25, 2010) - Rio Tinto Stadium is proud to announce that Sandy City has partnered with the multi-purpose entertainment venue to host the "Heart of the Wasatch Cup" high school football contest this Friday, August 27 between Hillcrest H.S. and Murray H.S. The first-ever Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) football contest at the home of Real Salt Lake is set for a 7:30 p.m. MT kickoff in Sandy.
Tickets for this year's Heart of the Wasatch Cup showdown, for which Hillcrest will officially serve as the host school, cost $9.00 for adults and $6.00 for students and are available for purchase either online at www.RioTintoStadium.com, over the phone at 801-727-2700, or in person at the Rio Tinto Stadium Box Office weekdays from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. MT. On-site parking at Rio Tinto Stadium for the contest will cost $5 in the South, West, and North lots.
"Games like the Heart of the Wasatch Cup further fuel Sandy City's vision of Rio Tinto Stadium serving as a field of dreams for Utah's young athletes," said Sandy City Mayor Tom Dolan. "We are pleased to help Rio Tinto Stadium add high school football to the growing list of events at the magnificent facility and look forward to hosting the teams and supporters of both Hillcrest and Murray High Schools on Friday."
The Hillcrest-Murray rivalry game will be a fitting debut for high school football at Rio Tinto Stadium, as the two schools are located less than five miles away from the 20,000-seat multipurpose venue. The Friday night affair will mark the second contest of the 2010 season for the UHSAA Class 5A schools, one week after both squads won their season openers - the Hillcrest Huskies defeating Herriman 17-7 on the road and the Spartans of Murray downing Ogden 28-10 at home, both taking place last Friday. The Hillcrest-Murray game will also be contested at Rio Tinto Stadium in 2011, with Murray to serve as the host school next season.
The Huskies-Spartans game marks the latest example of Rio Tinto Stadium's commitment to high school athletics in the Beehive State, growing on the foundation built by hosting the UHSAA Boys & Girls Soccer State Championships, additional regular season and exhibition soccer matches, and various USA Rugby and local rugby championship events since its opening in October of 2008. While this will mark the first high school gridiron contest at Rio Tinto Stadium, the home of Real Salt Lake is no stranger to "American Football," as the venue has also served as the host of the "Zions Bank Top of the Mountains Bowl Classic" Junior College game in December each of the past two years - and will do so again through its 2012 edition.
