San Jose Stealth News Release
(San Jose, CA, April 6, 2007) --- In a game the Stealth appeared to have in hand, it took two fourth quarter goals to secure San Jose's 9-8 victory over the Portland LumberJax at the Rose Garden in Portland this evening.
San Jose (7-6) scored early and often, to open up a 7-1 lead in the second quarter. Portland (3-12) countered with seven straight goals to overtake the Stealth, 8-7. But, thanks to back-to-back goals by Stealth All-Star's Colin Doyle and Jeff Zywicki, San Jose was able to regain the lead, and hold on for it's third straight victory over the LumberJax this season.
San Jose was paced by Colin Doyle, who led the Stealth attack with six points on two goals and four assists. Anthony Cosmo earned the win in goal with 31 saves. With the victory, the Stealth overtake Calgary for third place in the Western Division.
After scoring the only goal in the first quarter, the Stealth rattled off five goals in the second to take a commanding 6-1 lead into the dressing room at halftime. San Jose showcased the power of their special teams, converting on three of their four power play opportunities, and holding the LumberJax to one for three with the man advantage. Luke Wiles, who opened the scoring on the power play for the Stealth, added two assists in the second quarter. Gary Rosyski and Cam Sedgwick added two more power play goals at 5:03 and 12:09 in the second.
Six-time NLL All Star Colin Doyle opened up the scoring two minutes into the third quarter, but the LumberJax rattled three straight goals to cut the Stealth lead to four. Tensions mounted when Portland's Ryan Marshall received a double minor for Holding at 12:02 and LumberJax Head Coach Derek Keenan responded by throwing a water bottle out on the field at the referee. Keenan's retaliation gave the Stealth a two-man advantage, but San Jose was unable to convert. The third quarter ended with the Stealth leading 7-4.
The Jax stormed back in the fourth quarter. After Shaydon Santos and Ian Hawskbee both received penalties at 4:15 for High Sticking and Slashing, Portland went on to tie the game at seven on two power play goals. At 4:55, Portland took their first lead of the game on a short-handed goal by Bruce Alexander. San Jose tied the game 8-8 when Colin Doyle added his second power play goal of the night, snapping the Jax' seven goal scoring streak. Jeff Zywicki regained the lead for the Stealth when he beat Dallas Eliuk at 11:13, and the Stealth would hang on to win 9-8.
The Stealth return to San Jose tomorrow night to face the Edmonton Rush at HP Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. The Stealth are currently 2-0 against the Rush this season, and can clinch their first playoff berth in four years with a win.
