San Jose Giants Target Will Ferrell

San Jose, CA- The San Jose Giants officially invite actor and comedian, Will Ferrell, to be an honorary San Jose Giant for a day for charity. Ferrell will be taking the spot of former San Jose Giant and current San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey as part of #FerrellTakesTheField today, an adventure for an HBO special and project dedicated to raising funds for Cancer for College. The organization is a charity that helps individuals adversely affected by cancer to realize their dream of a college education. If Ferrell accepts his invitation to Municipal Stadium, the team will also host a special auction on the night for Cancer for College or the charity of his choice.
Ferrell will play ten positions as he visits 10 different teams in Spring Training today. As an honorary San Jose Giant he would get to enjoy ten different experiences at Municipal Stadium:
- Take a few swings in the cage during batting practice
- Throw out a ceremonial first pitch
- Take the field with the team for the National Anthem
- Intern for an inning, coordinating the famous Smash for Cash promotion, where "Billy Ray "Rojo" Johnson" can take his turn at trying to knock out the warehouse truck headlights
- "Anchor" an inning of the San Jose Giants Baseball broadcast
- Public address announce for an inning
- Lead the crowd in Take Me Out To The Ballgame
- Tend bar for an inning as the Beer Batter comes to the plate
- Join the World Famous Turkey Mike's BBQ staff where he can serve (and, of course, sample) mouth-watering ribs and chicken. Everybody panic! (or Panik
- Serve as the celebrity auctioneer as the San Jose Giants auction off game-used memorabilia, signed items from former San Jose Giants, now San Francisco Giants Homegrown Champions, and a Will Ferrell jersey. All proceeds from the auction would benefit Cancer for College or the charity of his choice.
Fans are encouraged to use #FerrellToSJ on social media to help spread the word about this invitation.
"Will Ferrell is one of the most recognizable faces of the modern day and it is so great to see him using the national pastime we know and love, along with his celebrity, to raise money for such a worthy cause," said Juliana Paoli, San Jose Giants Chief Marketing Officer. "We would be honored to have Mr. Ferrell accept our invitation. To have him put on a Giants uniform and become a part of our team for a day would not only be a thrill for the Bay Area, but the entire Minor League Baseball community!"
First pitch for the 2015 San Jose Giants home opener will take place Thursday, April 16 against the Bakersfield Blaze. San Jose's 2015 season begins on Thursday, April 9 in Lancaster. The Giants will host games at Municipal Stadium on Mother's Day (May 10), Memorial Day (May 25), Father's Day (June 21) and Independence Day (July 4).
