San Jose Giants News Release

Defense and timely hitting were the difference in the San Jose Giants 4-0 loss to the Modesto Nuts Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The loss is the Giants forth straight loss to the rival Nuts. San Jose now stands with a record of 30-19 with a four game lead over Modesto (26-23) in the California League Northern Division.

The Nuts would score all the runs that they would need in the top of the 1st inning off of California ERA Leader Nick Pereira as designated hitter "Doc" Brooks hit a three run homer with one out. Pereira would return to his usual dominating self to retire 11 out of the next twelve Nuts hitters that came to the plate, the lone exception being when Jonathan Herrera reached on Marcus Sanders' bobbled grounder in the third. The loss marks the first blemish on Pereira's record for the season as the right hander falls to 6-1.

Modesto starter Ryan Mattheus controlled the San Jose's hitters throughout the game. Mattheus threw his first shutout of the season on Sunday, as the right hander allowed no runs and seven hits while striking out five. Mattheus induced four double plays, three in the first five innings, whenever a Giants hitter did reach base. The seven hitter improved Mattheus' record to 3-4 on the season lowering his ERA to 3.62.

For the Giants offensively, third baseman Simon Klink and right fielder Brian Horwitz were the lone San Jose hitters to record a multi-hit game. The switch hitting Klink doubled in the 2nd and singled in the 4th to raise his season average to .254 while Horwitz singled to center in the third and knocked a double to left field in the 9th. The outfielder was also hit by a pitch to go 2-for-3 on the day.

San Jose will look to avoid the sweep as the finish their five game series with Modesto on Monday at 2:00 PM. The Giants will hand right hander Gregorio Martinez (1-3, 4.24) the ball on Monday. The Nuts send lefty Jake Postlewait (0-1, 7.00) to the mound as they inch closer and closer to the Northern Division leading Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM. Don't miss the San Jose Giants Memorial Day Celebration on Monday afternoon. What better way to spend your Memorial Day than by sharing it with the San Jose Giants at Municipal Stadium. Tickets for Memorial Day's game are available online at www.sjgiants.com or by calling (408) 297-1435 ext. 15.
