San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants won their fourth consecutive game with a 3-1 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. In front of a Giants home-opener record crowd of 3,576, three San Jose pitchers combined on 13 strike outs while Travis Ishikawa led the offensive attack with a perfect 3-for-3 night at the plate.
Giants starting pitcher Jesus Reina went five strong innings on the mound allowing just one run on three hits. Reina worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning and then retired 11 consecutive Modesto batters through the top of the fifth. All total, Reina walked just one and struck out a season-high tying seven.
Offensively, the Giants went to work against Nuts starting pitcher Aaron Marsden in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Three consecutive singles from Nate Schierholtz, Ishikawa, and Todd Jennings got the rally started. Center fielder Pat Dobson then stepped to the plate and singled through the left side to bring home Schierholtz to tie the game.
After a pitching change brought Alberto Arias into the game, Kevin Frandsen worked a bases loaded walk to force home the go-ahead run.
San Jose scored their third and final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Schierholtz doubled with one out and then scored two batters later on a Jennings sacrifice fly to left.
Meanwhile, Jeff Petersen relieved Reina to start the sixth and promptly fired three scoreless frames. Petersen used a pair of double plays in the sixth and eighth innings to work out of trouble. In the seventh, Modesto put runners at second and third with one out, but Petersen induced Simon Ferrer to ground out and then struck out Luis Guance to retire the side and maintain a two-run San Jose lead.
Justin Hedrick came on in the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of strike outs for his second save of the season.
In addition to Ishikawa, Schierholtz (2-for-4, 2B) recorded a multi-hit game. Schierholtz extended his hitting streak to eight games.
