San Jose CyberRays News Release
SAN JOSE, CA (June 8, 2003) â It was a tough way for the San Jose CyberRays to end a three-week stretch on the road, but a great way to end a frustrating streak for the New York Power.
New York, behind former CyberRays assistant coach Tom Sermanni, ended its winless streak against the CyberRays with a 2-0 victory in Spartan Stadium today. In six previous regular season games, the teams tied once and the CyberRays had won the rest.
New York scored in the 63rd minute off an unlikely free kick taken by defender Margaret Tietjen. Tietjen's shot from the left touchline sailed 40 yards to the far post and just dipped under the crossbar for her first goal of the season.
New York's second goal came in the 76th minute, due to the efforts of two of New York's subs. Midfielder Emily Janss, who had come into the game in the 44th minute, headed a cross from forward Tammy Pearman, who subbed in during the 68th minute. Pearman's cross from the left side found Janss directly in front of the goal and the ball bounced in from just a few feet. Prior to today's match, Janss was one of only three NY Power players to have ever recorded a point against San Jose (along with Milbrett and Anita Rapp).
San Jose did not start star Brazilian forward Katia for the second time this season. She has only one goal and two assists this season, an offensive showing very unlike what she produced last year, when she led the league with 15 goals and a WUSA-record 36 points.
It's the fourth time this season that San Jose has been held scoreless and the second time in a row. The CyberRays fell to Boston 1-0 last Saturday. It was the first shutout of the season for New York goalkeeper Saskia Webber.
