San Jose Back in Top Five in Week 18 Power Rankings

July 2, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release

CHICAGO - The only movement in the top five of the AFL Power Rankings came at the number five spot for the second week in a row, as the San Jose SaberCats (10-6) defeated the Chicago Rush (9-6), 75-61, in Week 17. The win moved San Jose back into the fourth seed of the National Conference playoff picture.

For the seventh consecutive week, the Arizona Rattlers (12-3) maintain the top spot in the Power Rankings. The Rattlers defeated the Spokane Shock (8-7) on the road in Week 17 to clinch a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive season. The Rattlers can clinch the West Division with a win over the Utah Blaze (10-5) in Week 18.

The San Antonio Talons (12-3) earned their ninth straight victory and a playoff berth in Week 17 after defeating the Kansas City Command, 58-48. The Talons can win the Central Division title if they defeat the Rush, who are coming off their first home loss of the season, in Week 18.

The Philadelphia Soul (13-3) survived a down-to-the-wire battle against the Tampa Bay Storm (6-9) in Week 17. A Donovan Morgan touchdown grab with 14 seconds to play proved to be the difference in the Soul's 83-79 victory. Philadelphia has already wrapped up home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but will have the opportunity to wreck the postseason hopes of the Spokane Shock (8-7) in Week 18.

Tommy Grady and the Blaze were not affected by a bye in Week 17, as Utah stays put at the fourth spot in the AFL Power Rankings. The AFL's single-season touchdown king will need to continue his dominant play as the Blaze travel to Arizona in Week 18 for a showdown with the top-ranked Rattlers.

A week removed from a game in which they allowed the most points in franchise history, the San Jose SaberCats traveled to Chicago to hand the Rush their first home loss of the season in Week 17. San Jose will host the South Division-leading New Orleans VooDoo (8-7) in Week 18.

The AFL Power Rankings are calculated on AFLFieldPass.com using vPower(tm), a scoring system based on winning percentage, strength of schedule, scoring percentage, and win-streak. The scale is normalized from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest).
