San Francisco Dragons News Release
San Francisco, CA -After a month long road trip, the San Francisco Dragons (4-2) returned home to foggy Kezar Stadium, notching their first ever home win, downing the visiting New Jersey Pride (3-4), 16-15 in overtime, in front of a crowd of 3,422.
Ryan Powell gave the Dragons the win by scoring a goal 36 seconds into the 10 minute overtime period. For his effort, Powell, who had four goals and four assists in the contest, was awarded the Bud Light Player of the Game. Powell has garnered one other Player of the Game award against Denver on June 10th.
Although the Dragons emerged as the victors, Head Coach Brian Silcott was reserved in his demeanor.
"As a team we didn't play a great game," commented Silcott, "but because we are a really good team, we had guys step up and that made the difference. Pete Inge and Tim Booth were both unbelievable at the faceoff X, RP (Ryan Powell) goes 4 (goals) and 4 (assists) and scores the game winner in overtime...as a whole, everyone played pretty well, but everyone on the team knows we can still play better."
After taking a 6-3 lead in the first quarter, the Dragons allowed three unanswered goals at the end of the second quarter, as New Jersey narrowed the Dragons lead to 8-7 going into the halftime break.
The Dragons never trailed in the game until a shot by New Jersey's Liam Banks put the Pride up 12-11 with 2:54 left in the third quarter.
New Jersey led the game 14-12 going into the final frame, until a two- point goal by Dragons midfielder Tom Zummo tied it at 14-14 with 9:34 left in the fourth quarter. Zummo's two-point goal was the only two- point score of the contest.
The Dragons, trailing 14-15 going into the last five minutes of the game, tied the score, 15-15, on a shot by defenseman Eric Martin, with 2:40 left to play.
Both Tom Zummo and attackman Joe Yevoli had hat tricks for the Dragons, and Dragons midfielder Tim Booth won 10 of 13 faceoffs for the contest. Peter Inge was 15 of 22 in the faceoff department, giving the Dragons 25 of 35 faceoff wins for the game. It was Inge who won the first overtime faceoff, giving the crucial first possession to San Francisco. Ultimately, the first overtime faceoff would also be the last, as Ryan Powell would score the game winner seconds later.
The win gives San Francisco four wins in their last five games, three of those victories coming on the road.
The Dragons return to Kezar Stadium next Saturday, July 8th, to take on the Western Division foes the Chicago Machine.
