San Diego's Shannon MacMillan named Player of the Week
April 22, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, April 22, 2002) - The second leading scorer in the WUSA last season picked up where she left off, as San Diego's Shannon MacMillan scored two goals and added one assist to lead the Spirit to a record-setting 6-1 victory over the New York Power Saturday afternoon. For her performance, the San Diego forward was named the WUSA Player of the Week for the Week ending April 21, 2002.
MacMillan carried her torrid offseason scoring streak with the U.S. national team to Torero Stadium, hitting a brilliant left-footed volley into the upper left corner in the 17th minute and then finishing a rebound of her own shot in the 40th minute to give the Spirit a 3-0 halftime lead. MacMillan then helped seal the game less than two minutes into the second half, setting up Zhang Ouying for the Spirit's fourth goal. It was the fifth two-goal game of MacMillan's WUSA career.
"Everything was going for us today, unlike last week," said MacMillan after the game. "You know that soccer is a crazy game and that's why we love playing it. Anyone can beat anyone in this league at anytime."
The six goals set a WUSA record for most goals scored in a game by one team and the five-goal margin of victory also set a WUSA record. MacMillan was second in the WUSA in scoring during the 2001 season with 12 goals and six assists for 30 points.
MacMillan, who captured 34 points in the voting, outdistanced teammate Zhang Ouying (14 pts.), Boston forward Angela Hucles (8 pts.) and Washington forward Meredith Beard (4 pts.). The WUSA's Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. 2002 WUSA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (as selected by PSRA)
