QUOTE SHEET:
Shannon MacMillan on the changing fortunes of soccer...
"Everything was going for us today, unlike last week," said MacMillan. "You know that soccer is a crazy game and that's why we love playing it. Anyone can beat anyone in this league at anytime."
THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HISTORY:
SPIRIT OPENS INAUGURAL SEASON BEFORE SELLOUT CROWD
April 22, 2001 - The San Diego Spirit played the Philadelphia Charge before a sellout crowd of 6,155 in Torero Stadium. Unfortunately, the Charge use goals in each half to beat San Diego 2-0. Doris Fitschen scored the first goal on a penalty kick past starting Spirit goalkeeper Ulrika Karlsson. Kelly Smith added the second goal to help Philadelphia to the win.
PERSONALITY PLUS:
KIM PICKUP: A GIRL THAT YOU CAN FLIP FOR
Kim Pickup is a defender. Her job is to stop players from scoring goals. In fact, she did it so well in college at Santa Clara University that she marshaled a defense, which set an NCAA record with 16 consecutive shutouts. She possesses speed, grit, height and fearlessness into the tackle, which earned her a coveted spot on the Spirit roster. She is not expected to score goals. But sometimes, however rarely, Pickup gets to venture near the net. Pickup started almost every game during her four-year career for the Broncos, helping the team to four NCAA Final Fours, but perhaps her most memorable highlight came her senior year when she scored the first, and what would be the only, goal of her college career. It came off a corner kick early in the match against the University of Evansville Aces. Said Pickup: "I hurled my body at the ball, it hit my hip and went into the goal. I celebrated as if we'd just won the World Cup. Yeah, my teammates scored six goals after that, so my goal lost a bit of its luster, but it didn't matter. Mine was the game-winner." Pickup is also featured in the San Diego Spirit media guide in a page-flip motion picture of her famous "Pick-Flip" throw-in.
SPIRIT MOVIE REVIEW: Julie Foudy on "Moulin Rouge"
Throughout the season, we will feature a movie review by a Spirit player. Today, captain Julie Foudy reviews the Academy Award-nominated film "Moulin Rouge."
Overview: No bombings, killings, or "Rambo-esque" moments (bonus)...Fast-paced, funny and romantic musical brought to film.
Thoughts: Don't be turned off by the crazy camera-work in the first 20 minutes. Overall, the movie had a great plot and was very creative.
Rating: GOAL
Rating scale: Goal= Awesome & great, Assist= Good, would recommend, Yellow Card= Average, and Red Card= Horrible, don't recommend.
