San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Spirit finalized their 20-player roster in preparation for Saturday's season opener against the Boston Breakers at Torero Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m. PT. Spirit Head coach Omid Namazi added former Atlanta Beat defender Lisa Krzykowski to the roster after midfielder Jenny Mascaro announced her retirement. Namazi also named Andrea Alfiler and Susie Palmer as the club's two developmental players.
Krzykowski, 26, a hard-nosed defender, played two seasons as a left marking back for the Beat, compiling one goal and four assists from the back. She played her collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she holds career records in goals scored (57), assists (27) and points (141). Prior to joining Atlanta, Krzykowski played five seasons for the Chicago Cobras of the W-League, winning the W-League title in 2000.
A roster spot for Krzykowski opened when Mascaro decided to retire from professional soccer to be with her husband in Texas. The skillful midfielder was a member of the Spirit for two seasons, posting three goals and six assists in 28 games. She earned the club's Playmaker of the Year award in 2002, even after missing eight games due to a broken foot.
Namazi completed his 20-player roster by adding Alfiler, a former Philadelphia Charge defender and Palmer, the Spirit's 2003 fourth-round draft pick as developmental players. Eighteen players (16 active and 2 reserves) are eligible to play in all home games. If the roster drops below 18 players for home games due to injury or national team call-ups, the developmental players can be activated.
