San Diego Spirit Match Preview
July 12, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release
THE OUTLOOK
The defending WUSA champion San Jose CyberRays and women's soccer legend Brandi Chastain come to town today for their first and only appearance at Torero Stadium this season. While the CyberRays have not been able to put together a long unbeaten streak like the one that vaulted them to the top of the standings last season, they are in the third place and are in solid position to defend their Founders Cup title. San Jose's good fortunes have come mostly due to the feet of Brazilian striker Katia, who torched San Diego for two goals in the second meeting of the two teams on June 9 in Kevin Crow's debut as head coach. The C-Rays trio of Brazilians - Sissi, Pretinha and Katia - have been very effective in the attack for San Jose while the center-defense of Kelly Lindsey and Diane Alagich, and the goalkeeping of U.S. National Team net-minder LaKeysia Beene, have made San Jose one of the toughest teams in the league. The Spirit have played San Jose pretty even this year, the difference being Katia's two brilliant goals at Spartan Stadium, and hope that the return of Shannon MacMillan from injury, plus the addition of Scottish striker Julie Fleeting, can bolster the attack.
CYBERRAYS NOTES...
· Tisha Venturini-Hoch has goals in three of the last four games.
· Katia had the second of her three two-goal games on June 9 against San Diego.
· Sissi is ranked third in the WUSA with nine assists, last year she led WUSA with 10.
· Thori Bryan played her 37th consecutive complete match on Wednesday against Atlanta.
SPIRIT NOTES...
· Shannon MacMillan has a 2-game point streak.
· Boston extended the opponents' goal scoring streak to a team-record eight games.
· Julie Foudy has her first two-goal scoring streak of her WUSA career.
· San Diego has allowed its opponent to score first in eight straight matches.
