San Diego Spirit Announced TV Schedule

April 1, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release

SAN DIEGO - World-class women's soccer will continue to be seen on Channel 4 San Diego in 2002. Already televising 250 live sporting events a year, Channel 4 San Diego will broadcast 14 San Diego Spirit matches beginning April 13 at 3:00 p.m. when the Spirit takes on the Carolina Courage from Torero Stadium.

Twelve of the 14 Spirit games will be telecast live; the remaining two games will be same-day tape delayed at 7:00 p.m. The new broadcast team of 25-year sports broadcast veteran Chris Marlowe (play-by-play), and San Diego Sockers head coach and KSDO's Inside Soccer radio show co-host Brian "The Mighty" Quinn (analyst) will call the action for games originating from Torero Stadium.

The WUSA has integrated individual teams' TV broadcasts this season into a framework that will give all telecasts a uniform graphic appearance, share advertising inventory and feature material from the markets of both teams. Under the new WUSA regional broadcast format, fans will be able to enjoy various play-by-play personalities on six Spirit road game telecasts during the 2002 season. For example, fans in visiting teams cities will receive the telecast featuring the Spirit broadcast team of Marlowe and Quinn, while San Diego fans would view a Spirit road match against the Charge at Villanova Stadium with the popular Philadelphia duo of Lou Tilley and Jim Harrison calling the action.

Three Spirit contests will be televised nationally by PAX TV (Cox 51, Time Warner 73, Adelphia 58), April 20 vs. New York, July 6 vs. Boston and July 27 at Washington. The league will have a nationally televised game each Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PT for 20 consecutive weekends beginning April 13.

In addition to Cox Channel 3 Orange County, which telecast Spirit games last year, the Spirit television network has added Las Vegas Metro Channel 48 as an affiliate. The Cox Communications channel will air four Spirit matches this season (April 27, June 29, July 31 and August 3). Cox Channel 3 Orange County will broadcast the same 14 Spirit games as Channel 4 San Diego in 2002.

Spirit telecasts were a success in 2001 averaging a WUSA-high 1.2 local rating and a 2 share of the audience in San Diego. "We couldn't be happier with the television coverage and ratings that we received last year," said San Diego Spirit general manager Kevin Crow. "Our goal this year is to make our broadcasts more innovative and casual-fan friendly. It is important for us to be able to have a wide reaching telecast for all fans to enjoy."
