San Diego Legion Over Austin Elite Rugby
February 25, 2019 - Major League Rugby (MLR)
Austin Gilgronis News Release
After Friday night's match up against the San Diego Legion, we head into a well deserved bye week after playing 5 consecutive games. The team has been battling hard, but has come up short against each opponent.
"We had a long talk with the players and this break is very important for us. They will be able to rest and flush-out of this negative spiral. We are all conscious about our potential and we have all decided to work even harder to make it happen. We are here for the long run and everyone is ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. Some players are finally arriving as well, which will bring some fresh energy," said CEO Thierry Daupin.
We look forward to our first road match in Glendale. Stay tuned!
Game Time: It didn't take long for the San Diego Legion to strike after a scrum advantage penalty and then slotted a kick for a 7-0 lead. Austin Elite Rugby answered right back with #9 Mickael Romera kicking for 3 to cut the lead to 7-3.
The Legion then added another try to the board from a maul and another in the right corner for a 21-3 lead.
It was then Austin's turn to attack from a 5-meter lineout. A pass by Romera was then intercepted for an easy try to push the lead to 28-3.
Austin Elite attacked again with #4 Ben Mitchell scoring a try and Romera slotting the kick to cut the lead to 28-10 at the half.
The Legion pushed the lead to 35-10 right into the second half.
Many reserves had entered the match and #19 Dylan Pieterse was sent to the bin shortly after he entered the match. Austin Elite scored short-handed with #5 Josh Larsen offloading to #21 Alex Faison-Donahoe and back to Larsen for the try to cut the lead to 35-17 after the conversion.
The Legion elected to take a shot at points after a penalty in the 69th minute for a 38-17 lead. But yet another try was confirmed by the Legion 45-17.
In the 75th minute, with the match well in hand, the Legion opted to go for a penalty kick from about a meter to midfield. The kick was short and neither team would score again.
MVP Index Man of the Match honours goes to #15 ZinZan Elan-Puttick.
