San Antonio Stars News Release

SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 24, 2015) -The San Antonio Stars received the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft via the league's Draft Lottery, held at ESPN Studios in Bristol, CT on Thursday evening. The 2016 WNBA Draft will be conducted next April.

The Stars finished the 2015 WNBA season with an 8-26 overall record and were one of four teams to vie for the top overall pick for the upcoming draft, holding 27.6 percent of the odds. Other lottery teams included the Seattle Storm (10-24), Atlanta Dream (15-19) and the Connecticut Sun (15-19).

Under the new format announced by the WNBA on Aug. 5, the 15th annual drawing was held among the four teams that did not make the playoffs during the 2015 season. However, instead of assigning each Lottery team odds based solely on its record this season, the odds were based on the cumulative records of the Lottery teams over the two most recent regular seasons (2014 and 2015).

San Antonio's second overall pick marks the highest since the team selected Kayla McBride with the third overall selection in the 2014 WNBA Draft. McBride led the Stars in scoring that year, and was a unanimous choice to the WNBA All-Rookie Team.

In last season's 2015 WNBA Draft, the Stars owned two first round picks and selected Dearica Hamby with the sixth overall selection, before trading the ninth overall pick to the New York Liberty in exchange for Alex Montgomery. The team also selected Dragana Stankovic (30th overall, third round) and Nikki Moody (33rd overall, third round).
