San Antonio Scorpions News Release
San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Scorpions played well against Liga MX opponents Tigres de la UANL, but ultimately came up just short on the scoreboard as the Guadalajara side notched a 2-1 win in front of 6,483 fans at Toyota Field.
Tigres scored their second of the match in the 58' when Gerardo Lugo tapped in a square ball from Damian Alvarez to raise fears the scoreline might trend towards last season's 5-1 friendly loss to Tigres. But the scoreline would look very different this time. Billy Forbes knocked in a ball that was fumbled by Tigres backup goalkeeper Richard Sanchez after a cross by fullback Jonathan Borrajo.
The Scorpions stayed on the front foot for much of the final 15 minutes, with Walter Restrepo having the best chance when he missed just barely wide right after creating space for himself outside the Tigres penalty area.
Tigres started off the match in control of the flow of action and quickly had the San Antonio defense under pressure. In only the 8' minute, Jorge Torres sent in an early ball from the left side of the field and Tigres striker Emmanuel Villa headed a powerful shot off the long cross and past a diving Tyler Deric to give the visitors the early lead.
Deric came up big the rest of the half, though, to keep the Scorpions within striking distance. First in the 21', Deric stoned Gerardo Lugo, who was in on the San Antonio 'keeper 1-on-1. Five minutes later, Deric had to dive at a full stretch to his right, but was able to parry away the well-struck effort from Vendrechovsky.
The best chance for the red and black was in the 5' when Billy Forbes got behind the Tigres defense on the left side of the 18 and sent in a ground cross that zipped right through the six past Tigres 'keeper Enrique Palos, but unfortunately did not meet a teammate's foot on the other side. San Antonio's fall season kicks off on July 12 in New York against the Cosmos. The Scorpions host two more international friendlies in the interim against the Mexican U-21 National Team (June 28) and Monterrey (July 6).
