San Antonio Scorpions News Release

San Antonio, TX (June 28, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions and Mexican Under-21 National Team played to a wildly entertaining 3-3 tie in front of 5,129 fans at Toyota Field Saturday night. Eric Hassli converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute to earn the Scorpions the dramatic draw.

The teams traded PKs that were each awarded for handballs in the second half to setup the final 3-3 score as 25 minutes before Hassli's spot shot, Mexican midfielder Jorge Espiricueta converted one to give the visitors the 3-2 lead.

In the first half, the Scorpions came out gunning for goal as they were already on the board before ten minutes had passed and almost had a second. In the 5' minute, Walter Restrepo found some space just outside Mexico's box and let one fly from 19 yards away. The shot had a lot of velocity, but sailed just over the crossbar. Three minutes later, the Scorpions broke out quickly after a Mexico free kick from 20 yards and Billy Forbes pounced on a loose ball outside the area. He thumped a left footed shot that went low and to 'keeper Luis Cardenas' right and into the back of the net to give San Antonio the early lead.

The young El Tri got on the scoreboard in the 40' off of a corner kick. The ball was served from their attacking left and found defender Luis Solorio on the far side of goal. He headed the ball down and midfielder Giovanni Casilla poached a goal from seven yards away to make it 1-1.

Mexico got their second within a minute of the start of the second on an unlucky bounce of the ball. Mexico sent in a looping cross from their left side and Scorpions defender Julius James went to clear the ball while facing goal, but unfortunately his effort went straight past Daryl Sattler for the own goal.

Second half substitution Eric Hassli brought the red and black back level at 2-2 in the 66' on a tap-in goal within the 6 that was set up by Billy Forbes. Forbes pushed towards the Mexican endline on the left side of goal and sent a square ball back to the big Frenchman that he casually tapped in for the score.

San Antonio's fall season kicks off on July 12 in New York against the Cosmos. The Scorpions host two more international friendlies in the interim against the Mexican U-21 National Team (June 28) and Monterrey (July 6).
