San Antonio Scorpions News Release
San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Scorpions tied Deportivo Saprissa 1-1 in an international friendly Saturday night at Toyota Field. With the draw, the Scorpions completed an undefeated preseason (4-0-3).
Defender Greg Janicki scored the tying goal in the '78 minute on a firm header past Saprissa goalkeeper Danny Carvajal. Attacking midfielder Danny Barrera assisted on the play by serving an in-swinging ball on a corner from San Antonio's attacking left. Barrera was a force in the attacking third all night for the Scorpions as he directed the team's attack and consistently put his teammates into good positions with his passing.
The Scorpions controlled the ball for most of the game and looked to be in position to score their opening goal much earlier in the game as they created a number of attacks that had the visitors from Costa Rica on their heels. The best chance came in the '27 minute on a corner kick served from the Scorpions' attacking right by Barrera. The outswinger found San Antonio captain Adrian Cann in the middle of the box, but the defender's headed effort went right at Carvajal. Later in the '71, another headed chance off of a corner kick, this time by midfielder Julius James, again went straight into the keeper's hands.
In the '29, Cann was defending in his own box when he collided with a Saprissa attacker and knocked him to the ground. The official immediately pointed to the spot and awarded Saprissa a penalty kick. Forward Ulises Segura took the shot and went low and to the right as Scorpions goalie David Bingham dived the opposite way.
San Antonio came close to tying the match in the '33 when fullback Jonathan Borrajo pushed forward and sent a cross into the 6-yard box. Forward Tomasz Zahorsky was sprinting to meet the ball and missed what would have been a point-blank header by inches.
Striker Eric Hassli, the former Major League Soccer All-Star and designated player, came on as a substitute in the '64 minute for Tomasz Zahorski. Hassli showed a very deft first touch and created a good chance when he backheeled a ball in the box to Walter Restrepo.
The NASL home opener is scheduled for April 12 at Toyota Field against Minnesota. Season tickets start at only $10 per game and can be purchased at Toyota Field Box Office or through Ticketmaster. Call 210.495.8686 for more information on season tickets or log onto SAScorpions.com.
