San Antonio Scorpions News Release
San Antonio, TX -The San Antonio Scorpions drew 0-0 with FC Edmonton in front of 7,087 fans at Toyota Field Saturday night. San Antonio dominated the match and put non-stop pressure on Edmonton's defense, but the 10-man Eddies proved up to the task as the Scorpions never found the final touch.
The game-defining moment came in the 27' minute as the Scorpions were attempting to breakout down the left sideline after an Edmonton set piece. A high clearance was sent towards a streaking Stephen DeRoux, who went to try and control the ball when disaster struck for visiting Edmonton. Center back Mallan Roberts was high up the pitch for the dead ball play and swung his leg high to try and control the ball, but instead of hitting leather he came in contact with DeRoux's face.
Referee Juan Guzman immediately reached for his back pocket to pull out a red card for Roberts. Eddies coach Colin Miller was forced to make a substitution and pull off midfielder Hanson Boakai and insert defender Kareem Moses.
In spite of being down a man for the remaining 20 minutes of the half, FC Edmonton still created plenty of problems for the Scorpions defense as they had four corners to just one for San Antonio in the opening frame. The Scorpions' best chance came on a rambling Restrepo run through the middle of Edmonton's defense in the 18'. Restrepo passed off to Eric Hassli on the left side of the Eddies' box and then the big Frenchman his a cross for strike partner Tomasz Zahorski. The ball never made it, though, as Edmonton captain Albert Watson intercepted the pass.
In the second half, however, being down a man caught up to the Eddies as they were barely able to move the ball out of their own half of the field. San Antonio sent in wave after wave of attack on the north end of the field and looked good for a breakthrough that unfortunately never came. There was a chance just inside the spot by Zahorski that the Polish striker didn't quite get full contact on and FCE goalkeeper John Smits saved the effort easily. Ten minutes later, Danny Barrera got a great look at the rebound of an Eric Hassli shot from 20 yards out, but his volleyed effort sailed high over the bar.
Then there was a sequence starting in the 68' where the Scorpions earned three straight free kicks with the final one leading to a strong header by captain Adrian Cann that went just high over the crossbar. In the 75', Zahorski was frustrated again as he got good head contact on a cross from Barrera, but his shot went straight at Smits.
Next week San Antonio will travel to Edmonton's home country, but far to the east as they make their first ever visit to Ottawa to play the expansion Fury. The Eddies will be back home to take on the Atlanta Silverbacks.
