San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC (1-2-2) will visit USL newcomers Fresno FC (2-1-3) on Sunday, April 22 at Chukchansi Park at 8 p.m. CT. The match marks the first of a two-match road trip for the Alamo City club and its first multi-city trip of the season.
SAFC heads into the match looking to earn three points after falling 0-3 to Orange County SC at Toyota Field on Saturday. The loss marked the first at Toyota Field for the club in 2018, as well as just the second since the start of the 2017 season (20 matches).
The match will mark the first of two consecutive road matches for SAFC, during which the club will also face USL expansion side Las Vegas Lights FC. Last season, SAFC earned a win and a draw in its first match against USL expansion teams, beating Reno 1868 FC 4-0 and earning a 1-1 draw against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Despite the challenge of playing away from home in environments that the team isn't familiar with, road trips present the team with an opportunity to bond with each other and focus on their soccer.
"I like going on these trips during the season," SAFC Captain Ryan Roushandel said. "We all get to spend time together and just worry about playing soccer together for SAFC and getting the results, so hopefully this will springboard us."
Fresno FC will head into the match after earning a 2-2 draw at home against Tulsa Roughnecks FC. The Foxes are 2-1-3 this season, and have recorded a win, a loss, and two draws at home. The club has scored nine goals while conceding eight, and currently sits in eighth place in the Western Conference standings.
SAFC will look to earn their first road win of the season after posting impressive attacking statistics last Saturday. Despite the loss, SAFC recorded 17 total shots against Orange County SC, eight of them being on goal. Both totals marked season highs for San Antonio, and their 17 shots are tied for the third-most that the club has recorded in team history in a single match. The Alamo City club also created a season-high 13 chances on the night.
While facing new opponents on the road presents a new challenge, the team is excited to experience a new atmosphere, and will look to build on last weekend's performance to earn a positive result on Sunday.
"It's great to go to two new environments," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "We haven't been there before so that will be exciting for the players. It's something we haven't seen before, so we're looking forward to these new experiences, but first and foremost we want to be ready for Sunday's game."
