San Antonio Scorpions News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Saturday, February 28, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions defeated Major League Soccer's FC Dallas 2-1 in the deeproot Funds Cup at Toyota Field Saturday night. The victory was the first for the Scorpions over FCD and they are now 1-1-1 all-time against their rivals from North Texas.

The match took a while to heat up on a cold, rainy night as both teams had difficulty creating offense in the first half. But the second half was a different story as the Scorpions picked apart the Dallas defense with what looks to be formidable speed on the wings with Billy Forbes and Cristian Palomeque and then César Elizondo up top.

In the 70', Elizondo dribbled into in the heart of Dallas' backline and drew a crowd of defenders looking to break up the attack. But Elizondo was able to slip the ball through a narrow opening to Palomeque, who had cut in from the right side towards goal. He quickly finished with his left foot before FCD goalie Chris Seitz could react to give the home side the 1-0 lead. The young Colombian - who only arrived in San Antonio two days ago - also had a big hit from about 30 yards out a few minutes later that came very close to being his second of the evening.

Instead, the eventual game winner went to Elizondo on a play that put the Scorpions' team speed on fine display. In the 88', fullback Stephen DeRoux quickly took a free kick at midfield and found Forbes flying up the left flank. Forbes motored towards the Dallas endline and then struck a powerful ground cross that went just beyond Seitz's reach in the six-yard box and found Elizondo finishing his far post run. Elizondo tapped the ball into the wide open net and the Toyota Field faithful erupted in anticipation of the win.

The celebration was almost premature as the Toros pulled one back only a minute later when Santiago Agudelo scored to make it 2-1. But the San Antonio defense was able to hold for the final minute and stoppage time and the Alamo City eleven notched their first victory of 2015. The Scorpions' next match is on April 15 at Toyota Field against the Austin Aztex in the inaugural Hill Country Derby.

Scoring Summary

'70 SAS #11 Palomeque (assist Elizondo)

'88 SAS #10 Elizondo (assist Forbes)

'89 FCD #27 Agudelo
