San Antonio, Carolina Pick up Crucial Road Wins

September 27, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL) News Release

NEW YORK (September 27, 2014) - Every match matters in the North American Soccer League (NASL), especially at this point in the Fall Season. As two of the teams fighting for the remaining spots in The Championship, the league's four-team postseason tournament, the San Antonio Scorpions and the Carolina RailHawks picked up crucial road wins in Atlanta and Indianapolis respectively.

In what was slated to be the NASL Match of the Week on ESPN3, the Florida Derby, the rivalry clash between the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Fort Lauderdale Strikers, never happened. Inclement weather in the Tampa Bay area forced the game to be postponed and rescheduled for Wednesday, October 8 at Al Lang Stadium.

Indy Eleven 0, Carolina RailHawks 1

The Carolina RailHawks posted their third straight win on Saturday night, topping Indy Eleven, 1-0, in front of a sellout crowd at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. A goal early in the second half from midfielder Nazmi Albadawi was enough for the RailHawks to earn three big points. The win moves them up to third place, at least temporarily, in the NASL Fall Standings, and helps them solidify their third-place position in the Combined Standings as well.

"We didn't play particularly well, but I think that one bit of quality in the final third by Nazmi Albadawi was the difference in the game," said Carolina RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "But I'm absolutely delighted with the three points. It was important for us to get them, and the result keeps us in the running for a spot in The Championship."

Atlanta Silverbacks 0, San Antonio Scorpions 1

The San Antonio Scorpions snapped their two-game losing streak with a 1-0 road win over the Atlanta Silverbacks at Atlanta Silverbacks Park on Saturday night. Midfielder Cesar Elizondo scored just a few minutes into the second half, giving the Scorpions all they would need to get past the struggling Silverbacks.

Although they earned the victory, the Scorpions were pressured throughout the game and relied on several big saves from goalkeeper Josh Saunders to keep the Silverbacks off the score sheet. The win moves the Scorpions back into first place in the Fall Standings, however, Minnesota United FC, who trails by just a point and has two games in hand, plays Sunday afternoon in Ottawa.

Tampa Bay Rowdies vs. Fort Lauderdale Strikers - POSTPONED

Unrelenting storms in the Tampa Bay area gave league and team officials no choice but to postpone Saturday night's Florida Derby, which was set to be played at Al Lang Stadium. The Rowdies and Strikers, who are both in the hunt for two of the remaining berths in The Championship, will play the match on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
