San Antonio & Austin to Face off in Inaugural Hill Country Derby

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Monday, February 9, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions will play the Austin Aztex in the inaugural Hill Country Derby on March 14th at Toyota Field, Scorpions President/General Manager Howard Cornfield announced today.
"Worldwide, soccer is built on regional rivalries, so it is only natural for us to play the Aztex in a match that should be fun for fans of both sides," said Cornfield. "We respect what they are building up north in Austin and we hope this is the first of many matches for Central Texas bragging rights."
This will be the first-ever meeting between the defending North American Soccer League (NASL) champion Scorpions and the Aztex of USL PRO. The two teams are only 70 miles apart and are each the closest professional soccer team to the other, so away fans will be able to make a short drive on I-35 anytime the teams meet to create a true derby atmosphere.
"Austin will provide us a great test in our second preseason match as they are building a strong squad," said Scorpions Head Coach Alen Marcina. "Given the new regional rules for the U.S. Open Cup, it's also very possible this won't be the last time we see them this season."
