Camden Riversharks News Release
CAMDEN, N.J. - The Camden Riversharks have signed outfielder Kalian Sams and infielders Paddy Matera, Joe Dunigan, and Zack MacPhee to contracts, the team announced today.
Sams, a Dutch outfielder, returns to the Riversharks after being picked up by the Texas Rangers last season. During the five games the 27-year-old spent in Camden, he batted 10-15, with six of those hits going for extra bases. He swatted three home runs, two doubles, and a triple. He was assigned to Double-A Frisco after being signed, where he batted .286 and added four more home runs in 20 games. The 6-2, 284-pounder peaked in AAA in the Padres organization before coming to the Riversharks in 2013. This will be his second season in the Atlantic League.
Matera, 26, also had his contract purchased during a strong 2013 campaign in Camden. The Toms River, NJ native batted .304 with six home runs in 40 games with the Riversharks a season ago, which caught the attention of the Cleveland Indians. Matera headed to the High-A Carolina Mudcats, where he swung the bat at a .282 clip with four homers and 35 RBIs. He will embark on his third season in the Atlantic League, and second with the Riversharks.
Dunigan makes his Atlantic League debut after spending seven years in the Mariners system. The lefthanded power bat hit 25 home runs in 2012 with Double-A Jackson, following that up with nine more a season ago in 38 games played. The Mariners fifth-round draft pick in 2007 brings a career .248 batting average with 126 career doubles and 110 career homers to Campbell's Field.
MacPhee comes to Camden after three seasons in the Cleveland Indians farm system. The versatile infielder has played six positions professionally and boasts a .975 fielding percentage overall. The 24-year-old was selected by the Indians in the 13th round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
"It is great to have Paddy and Kalian back this season, and adding Joe Dunigan to that mix gives us a strong offensive lineup," said Riversharks Manager Ron Karkovice. "MacPhee can help us all over the field defensively, and we are excited to see the contributions that all of these players can make this year."
The Riversharks home opener is on May 2nd, 2014 at 7:05. Ticket information is available on http://www.riversharks.com www.riversharks.com.
