Sammy Mejia named Player of the Week
January 2, 2008 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
The NBA D-League has named Fort Wayne Mad Ants guard Sammy Mejia the Performer of the Week, after he averaged 31.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while shooting 32-of-56 (.571) from the field and 28-of-35 (.800) from the free throw line for games played during the week of December 24.
Mejia started his spectacular week by scoring 26 against the Sioux Falls Skyforce and then exploded for 41 points against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He finished the week by going for 28 points this past Sunday while leading the Mad Ants to a win against the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Mejia is the second Mad Ant to be named NBA D-League Player of the Week, following in the footsteps of Jeremy Richardson, who was later a Gatorade call-up and now plays with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.
Mejia was a second round draft pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2007 NBA Draft. He played for the Pistons in three preseason games before being waived and picked up by the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. Mejia was sidelined with an ankle injury for the beginning of the season and played his first game with the Ants on December 19 against the Tulsa 66ers.
