Chicago Stars FC News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr was voted May's National Women's Soccer League Player of the month by the NWSL Media Association.
Kerr scored a brace in consecutive games this month against some of the top teams the league has to offer. The first two-game game for Kerr came against a North Carolina Courage team whose unbeaten run had dated back to June 2018. Kerr scored the opening goal 13 minutes into the match, sliding past the goalkeeper to give the Red Stars the advantage (GOAL). The Courage would equalize, but Kerr's assist helped regain the lead seven minutes later. In stoppage time, the Aussie superstar hit the dagger as she beat the Courage defense and scored her second goal of the game to give the Red Stars their first victory over North Carolina since 2017 (GOAL). As a result, Kerr was directly involved in all three goals for her club that game.
The following week Kerr and Chicago traveled Houston to take on the Dash, who at the time topped of the NWSL Standings. It took Kerr eight minutes to break the deadlock, splitting the defense and maneuvering around the goalkeeper to put Chicago ahead (GOAL). Four minutes later, Kerr haunted Houston again, finishing off a lovely give-and-go and burying the breakaway opportunity for a quick 2-0 lead (GOAL). The two early goals would be enough to carry the Red Stars to victory.
The Chicago star also made history in May, becoming the first player since 2016 to win NWSL Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks following the two performances. Kerr's 9 awards are most all-time and gave Chicago the distinction of becoming the first franchise to have multiple players win the awards in consecutive weeks.
Entering Matchday 8, Kerr remains the NWSL's leading goalscorer with six goals on the season while averaging a goal per game. With the Aussie preparing for the World Cup with the Matildas, Chicago travels to Portland to take on the Thorns on Sunday, June 2.
