Salmon Kings Sign Rob Hennigar As Team\'s First Line Center

The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed center Rob Hennigar for the 2010-11 season.

Hennigar became a free agent this summer after completing a two-year NHL contract. The 27-year old was originally signed to a deal by the New York Islanders after finishing a standout CIS career with the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Varsity Reds. At the end of his first season in the Islanders' system he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes and competed within their affiliation chain last season.

"Rob is a number one center and will be an exciting player to watch," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. "He can play in all situations and has averaged a point and a half a game while in the ECHL."

The Jordan, ON native joins the Salmon Kings after playing 23 games in 2009-10 split between Carolina's affiliates, the ECHL's Florida Everblades and American Hockey League (AHL's) Albany River Rats. The majority of his season was spent in Florida where he registered 23 points (8g-15a) and 10 penalty minutes in 17 games played. He also participated in six games on call-up with the River Rats where he notched five assists.

Hennigar began his professional career in 2008-09, splitting the season between the Islanders' affiliates in both the ECHL and AHL. In 38 games in the ECHL with the Utah Grizzlies, he posted a career-high 59 points (15g-44a) with 40 minutes in penalties. During the ECHL portion of his 2008-09 campaign, Hennigar posted a 1.55 points-per-game average, which was second among all ECHL players whom played at least half the season. He also dressed for 34 games in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, accumulating three goals and 10 assists for 13 points while posting 18 minutes in penalties. That spring, Hennigar played in four Calder Cup Playoff games with the Tigers where he recorded one goal and two penalty minutes.

For his professional career, Hennigar has seen action in 95 contests registering 110 points (28g-82a) and 68 minutes in penalties.

The 5-11, 194 lb. forward split an eight-year amateur career playing between the UNB Varsity Reds and the Ontario Hockey League's (OHL) Windsor Spitfires.

Hennigar attended school at UNB and participated in 108 contests with the Varsity Reds where he recorded a school record 177 points (46g-131a) as well as 84 minutes in penalties. During his time as a Varsity Red, he won a CIS National Championship (2006-07), was named CIS Player of the Year (2007-08), was awarded a spot on the CIS All-Canadian First Team (2007-08) and was selected to the University Cup All-Star Team (2007-08).

Hennigar began his junior career with four seasons with the Spitfires where he totaled 83 goals and 138 assists for 221 points spread over 246 games. He also dressed for 32 OHL Playoff games in Windsor amassing 23 points (9g-14a) and 20 minutes in penalties.

The Salmon Kings open the 2010-11 season on Friday, October 15th in Idaho with a two-game set versus the defending National Conference champion Steelheads.
