Salmon Kings sign Head Coach
June 8, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings are pleased to announce the signing of new Head Coach Tony MacAulay to a two-year contract, running through the 2007-08 season. MacAulay, 34, joins the Salmon Kings in his 11th year of coaching and his 5th season of professional coaching in the ECHL.
The native of Halifax, Nova Scotia finished the 2005-2006 season as Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations of the Trenton Titans (ECHL), where he helped the defending Kelly Cup Champions reach the American Conference playoffs.
From May to September 2005, MacAulay acted as the Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Texas Wildcatters until the team was granted a one year voluntary suspension due to Hurricane Rita. With a Bachelor of Recreation from Dalhousie University (Halifax), the former High School teacher and coach played 11 years as a Defenseman in the OHL, CIAU, and ECHL.
"Tony is an educator and a student of the game, which is why we are excited to have him join the Salmon Kings in our quest for the Kelly Cup," said Belisle. "He is a structured, organized and patient coach, and has experience in player development, recruiting, and building affiliations. Our players and organization will benefit greatly from his expertise."
As an Associate Coach in 2004-05, MacAulay helped to lift the Toledo Storm (ECHL) from a cloudy period the previous season, boosting the record from 23-38-11 to a playoff bound 41-26-5-a point increase of fifty-three percent.
He also quickly climbed the ranks in his first years of professional coaching. MacAulay started as an Assistant Coach and Assistant General Manager with the Roanoke Express (ECHL) in the 2002-03 season, and finished the 2003-04 campaign as Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations. He earned an impressive 84 points in his professional Head Coaching debut.
