Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night matchup, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Ontario Reign met in the finale of a three-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings started Matt Keetley in net, while the Reign countered with Curtis Darling.

After some strong neutral zone and defensive play to start the game, Victoria opened the scoring on the power play at the 13:17 mark of the first period when a rebound off a Chad Painchaud shot from the left faceoff circle found Andy Brandt's stick in the crease. The Salmon Kings forward pounded at the rebound, but Darling made the save. Darling could not stop Brandt's second shot as he buried his fourth goal of the season past the goaltenders blocker. Victoria took their 1-0 advantage into the first intermission, and outshot the Reign 13-2. in the process.

The Reign had an early chance in the second period off a Salmon Kings turnover that sprung Michael Pelech on a breakaway. The Reign forward put a quick shot on Keetley, who stopped the offering with his pad. A trailing Peter Lenes grabbed the lose rebound in front of the Salmon Kings goaltender, but also could not beat Keetley to get the Reign on the board. Victoria doubled their lead shortly after at the 5:55 mark on a 4-on-3 power play. Defenseman Brandon Roach took a feed from Chad Painchaud at the top of the left faceoff circle and fired a rocket that beat Darling glove side off the post and into the net. Roach's tally was his first of the year and first as a Salmon King. Scott Howes extended the Salmon Kings' lead to 3-0 at the 14:00 mark of the period when he made a nice tip in front of Darling from a Jimmy Sharrow point shot that deflected the puck up over the goaltender's blocker and into the net. Howes' goal was his second of the season, and Victoria's third power play goal of the night. Victoria outshot Ontario 20-8 in the period, and 33-10 thru forty minutes, taking their 3-0 lead into the third period.

Scott Howes notched his second goal of the game, and gave the Salmon Kings a 4-0 lead, at the 6:44 mark of the third period. Rushing into the zone on a 2-on-1 advantage with Adam Taylor, Howes crashed the net and picked up the Taylor rebound off Darling`s left pad and slid the puck across the goal line. Salmon Kings goaltender Matt Keetley made eight third period saves, and 18 in the game, the record his second shutout as a Salmon King. Victoria 4 Ontario 0.
