Salmon Kings Ink Goaltender Machesney

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed goaltender Daren Machesney for the 2010-11 season.

The Hamilton, ON native joins the Salmon Kings after playing in 21 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Moose during the 2009-10 season. During his time in Manitoba he posted a 5-14-0 record, alongside a 0.894 save percentage and 3.34 goals against average. Machesney also dressed for one game for the Moose in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs, recording 12 of 15 saves in 27 minutes of play in a no decision.

"With Daren's signing, we have acquired the services of an AHL-caliber goaltender," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison. "This is evident with his inclusion at Columbus' training camp, and the opportunity to earn a job with that organization."

The 6-0, 185 lb goaltender has been invited to the Columbus Blue Jackets' 2010 Training Camp that begins tomorrow in the Ohio city.

The 23-year-old goaltender was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals (fifth round, 143rd overall) in the 2005 NHL entry draft and signed to a three-year entry level contract. Machesney then spent three seasons (2006-07 through 2008-09) with the Capitals' AHL affiliated in Hershey. His best season as a Bear came in 2007-08 where he recorded a 22-10-2 mark with a 2.55 goals against average, a 0.916 save percentage and one shutout. In 84 career games with the Bears, Machesney garnered a 44-25-4 record, to go along with a 0.897 save percentage, a 2.91 goals against average and four shutouts. Machesney was part of the 2008-09 Hershey squad that captured the AHL's Calder Cup Championship.

Machesney also spent time during the 2006-07 season in the ECHL with the South Carolina Stingrays. In 15 games started he accumulated a record of 5-8-2, a goals against average of 3.30, a save percentage of 0.888 and one shutout. During the 2006-07 campaign, Machesney was called up from the Stingrays to the Washington Capitals to backup on three occasions but did not see playing time.

For his professional career, Machesney has started 120 games, posting a 54-47-6 record. This includes a goals against average of 3.04, a 0.895 save percentage and five shutouts.

Machesney was a member of Canada's 2008 Spengler Cup team in Davos, Switzerland, and helped lead the squad to the championship game.

The goaltender spent a three-year junior career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Brampton Battalion. In 92 total games in Brampton he posted a 47-31-10 record, alongside four shutouts, a 0.912 save percentage and a goals against average of 2.91. He also competed in 16 OHL Playoff games in Brampton, going 7-9 with a 2.93 goals against average and 0.905 save percentage. During his time as a Battalion, Machesney was selected to the 2005 CHL Top Prospects Game, named to the 2004-05 OHL First All-Rookie Team, and was honored as the OHL's Player of the Week and CHL's Goaltender of the Week.

The Salmon Kings open the 2010-11 season on Friday, October 15th in Idaho with a two-game set versus the defending National Conference champion Steelheads.
