Sacramento Sirens News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 27, 2003) â The Sacramento Sirens, Sacramento's professional women's full tackle football team, defeated the San Francisco StingRayz at Capital Christian High School yesterday by a final score of 68 â 22. In front of a home town crowd of over 800, the Sirens balanced attack overwhelmed the StingRayz and showed why the Sirens remain undefeated.
After three away games, the Sirens team picked up right where they left off. After a shaky Sirens start, QB Leilani Limary got the team going and kept the ball herself for a six yard run with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter. The point after kick failed leaving the score as 6 â 0 Sirens. An interception by LB Tamara Bells returned the ball to the Sirens offense and a 45 yard Limary pass to HB Julie Wicher raised the score to 12 â 0. The two-point conversion by HB Michelle Kahler brought the score to 14 - 0. The StingRayz offense turned over the ball on downs back to the Sirens offense who capitalized once more with a 13 yard pass to Wicher and a two-point conversion by Limary ended the quarter at 22 â 0 Sirens.
In the second quarter, the StingRayz defense held the Sirens offense to turn the ball over on downs. The StingRayz offense scored on a 15 yard pass reception by LaTanya Bradford and the two-point conversion by Pashen Bagsby kept the StingRayz in the game with a score of 22 â 8. But the Sirens offense quickly took over and scored three more touchdowns in the quarter (14 yard run by Wicher, 3 yard run by Lisa Giblin and 80 yard pass reception by Wicher) following two StingRayz punts, two fumbles and one stripped ball on a Sirens kickoff. K Nancy Stoner's point after kick was good while two 2 point conversions failed, thus ending the first half with a score of 41 â 8.
In the third quarter, the StingRayz woes continued as Sirens LB Joyce Brown picked off a pass to return the ball to the offense. The Sirens scored on a 1 yard run by FB Dana McIntyre and Stoner's point after kick was good bringing the score to 48 â 8 Sirens. The Sirens defense forced the StingRayz to turn the ball over on downs on the subsequent play and the Sirens offense scored on a 1 yard run by Wicher. Stoner's point after kick was good and the score at the end of the third quarter was 55 â 8 Sirens.
On the first drive of the fourth quarter, the Sirens QB Limary scored on a 7 yard run and with Stoner's point after kick good, the score raised to 62 â 8 Sirens. The StingRayz tried to make a comeback in the fourth quarter by scoring once on a 7 yard run by QB Renee Robinson and again on a 63 yard run by Bagsby but it was too late. A successful 2 point conversion by WR Tanya Kirk added to the StingRayz score raising it to 55 - 22. On the final play of the game, Wicher scored again with a 20 yard run but the point after kick failed, ending the game with a final score of 68 â 22 Sirens.
