Sacramento Capitals News Release
Up-and-coming American, Taylor Townsend, the #1 junior in the world, will play for the Sacramento Capitals of Mylan World TeamTennis this season. Townsend recently won the Australian Open junior singles and doubles and the Wimbledon and US Open doubles. Bryan noted, "Many tennis insiders think Taylor has potential to be the next great American women's player. She is good on the singles and doubles court and is very talented with a great personality." Townsend won her first WTA Tour main draw match at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last week.
One of the all-time great doubles players, Mark Knowles returns for his 12th season with the Capitals. He has been a 3 time Mylan WTT MVP, is a great leader and captain of the team. Coach Bryan says, "Each night he shows me new tricks on the doubles court. He is a popular player with our supporters. Like me, the fans will be happy to see him return."
The great Sam Querrey, who won the crucial match in the Davis Cup against Brazil in Jacksonville in February returns. He is a top 20 player and many feel he'll be in the top 10 in the world before long. Coach Bryan said, "At 6-6 Sam has a huge serve and a ferocious forehand. He is as nice as they come and a great role model for the kids."
Mardy Fish, # 32 in the world, will jump start the season playing 3 home matches the very first week. He has been the number one ranking American and as high as 7 in the world. He is recovering from heart palpitations and made a strong showing in Indian Wells. Coach Bryan said, "Fish is a beautiful all court player. He is famous for his two handed back hand that he hits with power and accuracy. We are ecstatic to have two American Davis Cup players on our team."
Women's doubles specialist Megan Moulton-Levy was Sacramento's third round pick. She was the #1 player and All American at the College of William & Mary. She reached the finals of the 2007 NCAA Doubles Championship and semifinals of the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship. Moulton-Levy has been ranked in the top 100 in the world in doubles the past two years in a row. Coach Bryan said, "Although diminutive, Megan is an amazing athlete and sparkling doubles player."
With their fourth round selection, the defending Western Conference Champions brought back Ryan Sweeting, who reached the final qualifying round of the Australian Open earlier this year and will be playing his second consecutive season with the team. Coach Bryan likes the potential of this young American player.
Capitals General Manager Kolleen McNamee said, "We wanted to draft a good squad. With the experience, talent, leadership, great personalities and proven success of the players on the team, the Capitals have the potential to win it all."
