San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today the addition of former Akron Zips defensive lineman Shawn Lemon. He takes the active roster spot of defensive lineman Blake Ferras, who was placed on injured reserve following an injury suffered in Saturday night's 71-70 win over Arizona.

"Lemon was a key player on the defensive line during his collegiate career," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "His quickness and agility will be an excellent complement to our existing size on the defensive line."

Lemon (6-1, 235, Akron) had a breakout senior campaign in 2010, leading the team with seven sacks (0.58 sacks per game), which ranked him fourth in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and tied for 51st nationally en route to All-MAC second team honors. He also led Akron in tackles for loss (ten-and-a-half), posted a conference-best four fumble recoveries and forced three fumbles. In 2009, he appeared in 11 games, recording 14 unassisted tackles, ten assisted tackles, and six-and-a-half tackles for loss. As a sophomore in 2008, he played in 12 games, starting six, and finished the season with 34 tackles, including four for losses. He also played in the first six games of the season and had five tackles during his freshman season.

At Westlake high school in Waldorf, Md., Lemon broke the school single-season record and the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference record with 21 sacks. Additionally, he posted 97 tackles as a senior, when he was named first team All-Metro. He also ran track, played basketball and was an honor roll student.
