Rush inks AFL Lineman of the Year to two-year contract extension

May 9, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Chicago Rush News Release

The Chicago Rush announced today that it has signed John Moyer, the Arena Football League's reigning Lineman of the Year, to a two-year contract extension through the 2007 AFL season.

"We could not be more excited to know that John will be with us for the next two years," said Rush head coach Mike Hohensee. "I think it was a great move by the organization, and I think the Rush fans will be excited to know he is staying in Chicago. John has been one of our most-consistent two-way players during the past four seasons, and week-in and week-out he has been the one guy that other teams have had to worry about up front."

Moyer (6-3, 265, Eastern Illinois) is the cornerstone of Chicago's line and one of the best two-way players in the AFL. Voted First Team All-Arena in 2003 and 2004, Moyer has been Chicago's Lineman of the Year in each of his three previous seasons with the Rush. This year, Moyer is making his case to repeat as AFL Lineman of the Year, again leading all Rush linemen with 27.5 tackles, nine tackles for loss and six sacks. He also has broken up three passes, recovered three fumbles and forced two fumbles this season.

Since joining the Rush prior to the 2002 season, Moyer has recorded 29 sacks – five more than any other player in the AFL over the past four seasons.

But what makes Moyer special is his ability to excel on offense and special teams in addition to defense. One of the best pass protectors in the AFL, Moyer only has allowed one sack in the past two seasons. His footwork and hands have made him a dangerous receiver as well, catching eight passes this season, six of which have gone for touchdowns. On special teams, Moyer has blocked three kicks this season, and eight dating back to the start of the 2004 season.

During his seven-year career Moyer has played in 94 games and recorded 147 tackles, forced 14 fumbles and recovered 13 fumbles. He also has registered 34 sacks – ranking eighth in AFL history.

The Rush (8-6) returns to Allstate Arena this Sunday, May 15, for its final regular season home game against the Grand Rapids Rampage. Kickoff is set for noon and fans wishing to purchase tickets may order by calling Ticketmaster at (312) 559-1212, or by visiting the Ticketmaster Web site at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets also may be purchased in person at any Ticketmaster outlet or the Allstate Arena box office.
