July 19, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Chicago Rush News Release
The Chicago Rush announced today it has hired Bruce Cowdrey as its special teams coordinator and fullbacks/linebackers coach. Cowdrey replaces Dave Witthun who resigned last month to take a position as line coach with the San Jose SaberCats.
Cowdrey, currently the head coach of the Peoria Rough Riders of the United Indoor Football League, will join the Rush after his team concludes its season this weekend.
"Bruce is a winner and will make an excellent addition to our staff," said Rush head coach Mike Hohensee. "I have gotten the opportunity to get to know him over the past five years and find him to be an outstanding coach."
Cowdrey has coached in Peoria for six seasons - five as the head coach of the Peoria Pirates (playing in the Indoor Football League in 1999-2000 and af2 from 2002-2004), and one as head coach of the Rough Riders (2005) - compiling a 66-35 record and leading the Pirates to an IFL Gold Cup title in 2000 and an af2 ArenaCup title in 2002.
In addition to coaching in Peoria, Cowdrey was the head coach of the af2's Pensacola Barracudas in 2001 and the offensive coordinator for the IFL's Madison Mad Dogs in 1998, where his quarterback was current Rush QB Raymond Philyaw.
Prior to getting involved in Arena Football, Cowdrey spent 21 years as a college assistant coach, coaching at Indiana State (1996-97), Fort Hays State (Kan.) (1994-95), Oklahoma State (1992-93 and 1986,) Purdue (1990), Northwestern (1987-89), Northwest Missouri State (1982-1985), Arizona Western Junior College (1979-1981), South Carolina (1978), and Missouri (1976-77). He also served as an assistant coach with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts in 1991.
The 2006 Arena Football League season begins in January and reservations for 2006 season tickets currently are being accepted. To reserve your tickets, or for more information about 2006 Rush season tickets, fans can call the Rush at (877) Rush-Tix (787-4849) or visit the team's Web site at www.chicagorush.com.
