Topeka Pilots News Release

After 5 consecutive losses to the RoadRunners, the Amarillo Bulls got off the mat and posted a 3-2 win over Topeka on Wednesday night, locking up second place and home ice in the NAHL South Division Semi-Finals in the process.

Doomed by penalties in the first period, Topeka surrendered a 5-on-3 power play goal to Zack Smoot who partially fanned on his shot at the side of the net but the off speed shot found its way across the goal line for a 1-0 lead at 7:24. The Bulls were handed a gift at 8:51 as a crossing pass was put right on the stick of T.J. Sarcona in front of the net and he finished it with a nifty backhander upstairs for a 2-0 lead that Amarillo held after 1.

In the second period, Zack Smoot scored again on a carom off the endboards, putting a quick backhander into the twine and Topeka trailed 3-0. The 'Runners got a spark at 19:26 as Zach Schrotenboer followed his own rebound at the side of the net to get Topeka on the board, trailing 3-1 after 2.

The third period saw Topeka generate some scoring chances, finally closing to within a goal on a Jordan Davis one timer from the slot at 18:50 with the extra attacker on the ice. Amarillo withstood the pressure and held on for the 3-2 win, handing Topeka their third straight loss and clinching second place and home ice in their first round playoff matchup against the Texas Tornado.

Topeka (42-12-3) and Amarillo (36-14-6) meet again Thursday evening in Topeka. It will be the last game of the year for the RoadRunners while Amarillo will face Texas on Saturday to close out their season. The game will be broadcast via streaming audio at countrylegends1069.com, available on pay-per-view on FASTHockey.com, and available in the arena on 88.9 FM.
