Runners Blank Jr. Blues, 4-0
December 8, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release
In a Sunday afternoon game that had been shifted to accommodate NCAA Volleyball in Landon Arena over the weekend, the RoadRunners scored on their first shot of the game and steamrolled to a 4-0 win over the Springfield Jr. Blues, with goalie Matej Tomek stopping 21 shots en route to his 4th shutout of the season.
On a brisk rush through the neutral zone set up first by a Daniel Rzavsky pass, Mike Gornall and Tyler Irvine exchanged a couple of sharp passes before Irvine deked the Springfield netminder at 3:18 of the opening period to put Topeka up 1-0. Later in the period, Sly Sutter snapped home a power play goal assisted by Gornall and Sam Rennaker and the RoadRunners led 2-0 after 1.
Former Springfield blueliner Will Scherer stuck it to his old squad at 10:56 of the second period when he fired a wrister past Dryden McKay on a 2-on-1 rush, set up beautifully by Irvine for a 3-0 lead, and Topeka kept the pressure on, with Cam Strong finishing a Ryan Polin shot just moments after Willie Brown was denied at point blank range, putting Topeka up 4-0 at 12:05 and causing Springfield to spend their timeout to gather themselves. Topeka stayed strong, and held fast through the remainder of the game, cruising to a 4-0 victory, improving to 10-1-0 at Landon Arena this season.
Topeka (19-6-2) and Springfield (11-14-1) meet again in a special Monday matinee, with a 1:00 pm faceoff set in Landon Arena. Tickets are just a buck if purchased through the RoadRunners Offices or by calling 785-286-PUCK.
