Abilene Ruff Riders News Release

ABILENE, TX. : The Abilene Ruff Riders (3-3) will play host to the Corpus Christi Hammerheads (2-4) this Saturday, May 16 from the Taylor County Expo Center. Abilene will look to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping a 58-36 contest to the El Paso Generals back on Saturday, May 9. Abilene's defense surrendered a season-high 58 points to the pass friendly Generals. El Paso outscored Abilene, 31-15, in the second half as the Ruff Riders offense could only manage two offensive touchdowns in the half. Quincy Carter finished the game with 252 yards passing and five touchdowns, however, Carter was sacked twice by the Generals defense.

Corpus Christi came away with a big win last Saturday over the Odessa Roughnecks, 42-31. QB Cory Miles had an explosive first half with five touchdown passes as Corpus got out to a 34-17 halftime lead. Odessa made a valiant comeback in the second half but the Hammerheads defense turned up the heat as they intercepted Roughnecks QB Dennis Gile twice to seal the victory. Look for Miles to get another start this week as he will attempt to find Nathaniel Dunn, Toric Goins and reigning IFL Special Teams Player of the Week selection, Schuyler Anderson in the passing department. It is likely that Miles will get the start if Michael Bishop will not make the trip and Ty Sellers is still bothered by a hamstring injury.

The Ruff Riders defense which is led by LB Rico Brooks and DB Joey Longoria, will pressure Miles as much as possible in the pocket. Mile received good protection from his O-line in the win over Odessa. Expect DE Willis Hogan to be another key player for the Ruff Riders defense as he will make a big impact on the D-line.

Offensively, Abilene will have to play mistake free football in order to keep Corpus's offense off the field. Quincy Carter has a trio of receivers to turn to in Mike Carrillo, Fred Howze and Jerale Badon. Look for Carlos Alsup and Bernard Payton to be the go to players in the rushing department. However, the Hammerheads have a solid core of secondary players and linebackers. Wali Mumin currently leads Corpus in total tackles and Stephen Fillmore has the ability to make many open field tackles. Abilene has already defeated Corpus once this season back on April 18, 33-27. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and Abilene will remain at home next week to face divisional opponent El Paso.

RUFF RIDERS IN THE COMMUNITY -

The Abilene Ruff Riders will be holding a special Dancers / Players Autograph session from Star Dodge Car Dealership in Abilene on Saturday, May 16.
