Abilene Ruff Riders News Release
ABILENE, TX. : Coming off a bye week the Abilene Ruff Riders were looking to get back in the win column as the Roughnecks were seeking to keep their post-season hopes alive with a win on Saturday, June 13 from the Ector County Coliseum. However, the Abilene defense manage to shut-down the Roughnecks passing attack and key stops in the second half led to an Abilene win over Odessa, 40-27. QB David Bowie started in place of the injured Quincy Carter for the Ruff Riders and he got things rolling on the first play from scrimmage as he found Juan Reese for a 35-yard touchdown pass to give Abilene the early 6-0 lead. The Ruff Riders would shut-out Odessa in the first quarter, 11-0, with the addition of a 29-yard field goal from Nick Pertuit and a safety after a bad snap from Stan Primus to Dennis Gile forced Gile to fall on the football in the end-zone.
Odessa found the end-zone in the second quarter for the first time of the game as RB DeWayne Hogan cashed in a two-yard touchdown run to close the gap at 11-6. Abilene quickly countered as Bowie found Fred Howze for a 16-yard touchdown pass which was initially tipped by the Roughnecks secondary just a few yards from the end-zone. As Odessa trailed 17-6 the Roughnecks registered a five-play drive that took over three minutes and it was capped off with a one-yard touchdown run from Dennis Gile to make it 17-13. Once again the Ruff Riders were able to counter with a touchdown pass this time 29 yards out from David Bowie to Fred Howze on a third and long situation. With the Roughnecks trailing 24-13, Odessa looked to score before halftime but Dennis Gile was intercepted which led to a 27-yard field goal from Nick Pertuit to make it 27-13, Abilene leading at halftime.
Odessa was able to outscore the Ruff Riders in the third quarter as DeWayne Hogan picked up his second rushing touchdown of the night from five yards out to make it 30-20. Hogan's second touchdown came after a 30-yard field goal from Nick Pertuit with 9:17 left in the quarter.
Abilene tacked on another field goal to begin the fourth quarter extending their lead to 33-20. The Roughnecks began another late surge as Hogan found the end-zone for the third time to cut Abilene's lead to 33-27. The ball game turned to the Roughnecks favor as David Bowie fumbled a snap on the ensuing Ruff Riders drive as Keith Turner was able to fall on the loose ball. Odessa looked to take the lead following the fumble but on a fourth and long situation Dennis Gile was stripped of the football by Brandon Henry. Henry recovered the fumble and returned it 19 yards for the touchdown sealing the win for the Ruff Riders at 40-27.
Ruff Riders QB David Bowie threw for 119 yards and three touchdowns as Juan Reese caught three passes for 68 yards and one touchdown. Dennis Gile was limited to 51 yards passing and no passing touchdowns but DeWayne Hogan did run for 50 yards and three touchdowns.
