Roughnecks in U.S. Open Cup Action Tonight
May 18, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
Tulsa Roughnecks F.C. (TRFC) take a break from regular season USL play to take part in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Like all participating USL teams, the Roughnecks are entering the tournament in the second round.
It is the first-ever meeting between the Roughnecks and the Des Moines Menace, a member of the Premier Development League (PDL).
Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7:30pm at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines, Iowa.
The match broadcast will be available on YouTube.
TULSA ROUGHNECKS FC
The Roughnecks make their second appearance in the U.S. Open Cup. Last year, TRFC defeated Seacoast United, a PDL side based in New Hampshire, 1-0 in a second round meeting played at the University of Tulsa. The Roughnecks were eliminated in the third round with a 1-0 loss to the Oklahoma City Energy at ONEOK Field.
The winner of Wednesday's match will advance to the third round and will face the winner of San Antonio FC (USL) and Corinthians FC (NPSL). That match would likely be played on Wednesday, June 1.
Tulsa will enter the cup match with a 2-6-1 regular season record.
Captain Sammy Ochoa comes in on a goal-scoring streak. Ochoa has scored in three straight matches and has five total goals in those three games.
THE OPPONENT
Des Moines advanced to the second round because of 2-1 victory at F.C. Wichita on May 11. F.C. Wichita is an NPSL side that the Roughnecks defeated 3-2 during the preseason.
The Menace have a storied history in the US Open Cup. In 10 previous Cup appearances, the Menace has collected six wins against professional teams - the second-highest total by a current amateur side. Last season, they were eliminated from the tournament by USL team Saint Louis FC, losing 2-1 in overtime in St. Louis.
Des Moines has been eliminated from the US Open Cup by Sporting KC of MLS on three occasions.
Des Moines' 13 Open Cup wins are tied with Michigan for the most by a current amateur team.
LAMAR HUNT US OPEN CUP HISTORY
Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 100-plus-year-old single-elimination tournament.
In 1999, the U.S. Open Cup was renamed the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to honor the long-time soccer supporter and pioneer. Hunt, who died in 2006, was one of the sport's first major ownership figures in the United States and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. He and his family are long-time owners of the Kansas City Chiefs NFL franchise.
Sporting KC are the current title holders after defeating the Philadelphia Union in penalty kicks last year.
